Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy

Blue light therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a light based treatment used to treat pre-cancerous damage in order to avoid progression to skin cancer.

It combines a topical medication with a light source to activate that medication. It can be used on the face, scalp, chest, arms and legs.It is an alternative to liquid nitrogen, creams, and cautery.

In some instances it can be used to treat skin cancer and acne. Many patients tolerate it very well and are pleased with the smooth skin they have after the treatment.

In some cases, repeat or maintenance treatments may be necessary depending on the severity of the pre-cancerous damage.

PDT will cause redness and peeling and in some cases it can be severe. Please notify your provider if you have a history of cold sores, sensitivity to light, and give them your full medication list.

You will have to stay out of the sun for 48 hours after treatment to avoid further reaction and side-effects. In general it is covered by insurance (for pre-cancers) but authorization from your insurance must be recieved.

Your team at Fora Dermatology will answer all your questions and make sure you are ready for treatment and that the proper insurance authorization has been granted. Below are some additional links about PDT.
